Web Search Pacific’s After5 Meeting 28th October 2013

Dr Marc K. Peter, Executive Director, Commercial & Solutions, LexisNexis

At the OctoberAfter5 meeting, attendees enjoyed a terrific presentation by Dr. Marc K. Peter, in RFC Ambrian Limited’s beautiful boardroom overlooking Circular Quay in Sydney.

Marc avoided giving a sales talk and gave us instead a most interesting overview of LexisNexis – its philosophy, its history in Australia and New Zealand since the early 20th century, and its extraordinary range of products and services.   He started with the company’s mission –

To Advance the Rule of Law Around the World.
This is the unifying purpose behind our work with customers and the communities we serve. We will support our government to ensure its officials and agents are accountable under the law. We will ensure laws are clear, publicised, stable and fair. We will be an indispensable partner to legal
and other professionals to ensure they have authoritative, accurate and comprehensive information.

Then Marc took us on a tour of key products sprinkled with occasional delightfully humorous remarks.    Of course we all know LexisNexis is a major player in the legal information field, and it is a very large international company earning billions of dollar sales.  But it was great to hear about the charitable work LexisNexis is engaged in in Africa and the Pacific Islands especially and why.

It was intriguing to hear how the mission statement has driven some of the innovative new products. Many police prosecutors for example are now armed with LexisNexis Red – a tablet based reference tool (not an E book Marc stressed!) – when facing barristers in the courtroom. http://www.lexisnexis.com.au/lexisnexisred/ and LexisNexis Practical Guidance   http://www.lexisnexis.com.au/practicalguidance/ that has been designed to assist new lawyers get up to speed quickly in specific practice areas was interesting.

The goal to help improve productivity in all the legal processes was evident with the discussion about LexisNexis CaseBaseCitator http://www.lexisnexis.co.nz/casebase/, and Lexis for Microsoft Office http://www.lexisnexis.com.au/lexisformicrosoftoffice/.  We also had a peep at the contribution to streamlining practice management  http://lexisnexis.com.au/practicemanagement/ and a quick look at Business Intelligence Solutions   http://lexisnexis.com.au/businessinsightsolutions/ and  Governance, Risk & Compliance   http://www.lexisnexis.com.au/riskandcompliance/default.aspx

It is well known how generous LexisNexis is to law schools enabling students to become familiar with LexisNexis but it was a revelation to me how LexisNexis behind the scenes actually helps academics prepare course material for their students also.    http://www.lexisnexis.com.au/knowledge-network/

Capital Monitor that reports activities at all Australian parliaments is clearly in safe hands and many in the room were interested to hear that the Nexis side of the business has such an extensive range of Australian newspapers online including the AFR, the major dailies and the regional papers. There was also time for brief discussions about the amazing software products and the extensive hard copy publishing activities as well.
