Workshops

Power Searching with the Pros is a two-day intensive workshop spotlighting the tips and techniques used by Super Searchers, designed to take your searching skills to world-class levels. Live demonstrations highlight techniques that can either lead to superlative results -- or information disasters.

Web Search Pacific offers both public and customised private workshops. Mary Ellen and Chris have developed all new content for 2008. Here's what's on the schedule for this spring:

Power Searching with the Pros 2008 - Day 1
Cutting Edge Web Search Essentials

Web Search Update 2008
Web search has become crucial to our lives - in fact, it's the second most common online activity after email. Though "Googling" is now verb, everyone's favourite search engine has limitations. This presentation takes a look at the evolution of web search, what's new at all of the major search engines, how to leverage emerging search tools, including mobile, local, image, video and news search sites, and examines "What about the semantic web: Is it here yet?"

Searching in a Blended and Personalised Search World

Two major trends have changed the face of web search dramatically during the past year. The first is the emergence of "blended" or universal search results, where traditional web search results are supplemented and augmented with news, image, video, book and other types of search results. The other trend is personalised search results, surfacing information based on your past behaviour. While both trends are promising, they also make it harder to control what you see and can occasionally produce unintended or negative consequences for searchers. This session explores how blended and personalised search works and how use these features to your advantage while searching.

Advanced & Hidden Features of the Major Search Engines
All of the leading search engines offer more than you see in their Advanced Search pages. This session will cover the undocumented and hidden power search tools in Google, Yahoo, Live.com, and more. These techniques will enable you to search in ways you never could before.

Search Engines That Don't Begin With "Goog"
While Google dominates the search engine world, there are many lesser-known search engines that can provide you with the specialised tools you need to conduct in-depth research on the web. This session will show you how to get the most out of some of these non-Google search engines.

Power Searching with the Pros 2008 - Day 2
Advanced Web Search Tools & Techniques

Building and Using Customised Search Engines: How You Can Out-Google Google
Do you deal with the issue of your clients believing in IAOTWFF -- It's All On The Web For Free? Wouldn't you like to say to your clients: "Are you tired of either finding too much junk or not enough useful information when you use Google or Yahoo? Then use our version of Google, which focuses specifically on your interests and your industry." This session covers the tools for easily building customised search engines for your clients and user groups.

Scholarly and Academic Searching on the Web

While researchers often rely on the value-added online services for in-depth research in scholarly and academic journals, the major search engines are starting to offer better tools for searching this content as well. Learn how to get the most from Google Scholar, Live.com Academic, and other sources of academic and scholarly research.

Multimedia Search: Finding Sights, Sounds & Other Non-Text Content
Today there are so much non-HTML content -- audio, video, images -- and other formats such as RSS/XML. This session provides tips, techniques, and tricks from different search engines for searching non-text content on the web.

People Search In A Web 2.0 World
A new generation of specialized "people search" services has emerged during the past year, offering more reliable information and better targeting - but also introducing new elements of uncertainty and noise into the process. This session takes a deep look at these specialised people search tools, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each. We will also look at "social search"; think of social search tools as Internet wayfinding services informed by human judgment, meaning that at least one person, but more likely dozens or hundreds of people, has "consumed" the content and decided it's worthy enough to recommend to others. How does social search fit into an information professional's toolkit and what are its drawbacks?

Search Engine Marketing For Info Pros
Many information professionals don't realise that there are legions of "search marketers" who actively work to "optimise" their web sites to achieve top rankings in search results. These efforts can influence the quality of information appearing in search results - particularly when results are influenced by "black hat" marketers or, worse, web spammers. This session looks at search marketing, covering both natural search results and paid search advertising results, and also offers some tips for helping libraries and other quality information providers fight back and make sure their web sites are "search engine friendly."

Customised Private Workshops

In addition to our scheduled public workshops, Web Search Pacific offers customised workshops developed for your organisation or group. These workshops are particularly useful for organisations that need a secure and confidential environment in which to discuss specific research or information management concerns. Custom workshops are also useful for groups that need staff training developed specifically for the needs and expertise level of their employees.
