Invitation to After5 meeting, Sydney, Tuesday August 26 2014

Topic: The Thrills and Spills of Bringing an Iconic Memory Institution into the Digital Age

This is a great opportunity to hear Dr Alex Byrne, the State Librarian and Chief Executive of the State Library of NSW speak about the changes underway in that magnificent institution.

His current position follows posts in library and university executive management at several Australian universities. He is also the Deputy Chair of National and State Libraries Australasia, a partnership of the National Library of New Zealand and the national, state and territory libraries across Australia. Alex served for a decade in leadership positions with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions including President from 2005 to 2007.

Dating back to 1826, the State Library of New South Wales is Australia’s oldest library and prides itself on its magnificent collections. Replete with tradition, it is rapidly becoming a centre of digital excellence.

Alex explores the opportunities and challenges to be managed in that transformative process including technology, client perceptions, staff views, operating in the public sector and the very notions of ‘collection’ in the Twenty first Century.
