Web Search Pacific Presenters

Greg R. Notess

My Background

I first got interested in libraries while working a summer job in the Glacier National Park communications center. I found that I loved answering questions and researching answers. After library school at the University of Washington, I got a job as a reference librarian at the library at Montana State University, and I have been digging for answers since then. Writing and speaking about web search has given me the opportunity to also dig more deeply into how search engines work, how they change, and how search functions compare.

My Areas of Expertise

My reference librarian work has kept me focused on finding answers for the broad range of questions in academia for the past few decades. In addition, my research into web search and its focus on comparing search engines in terms of databases, search functions, and search capabilities has kept me busy since the search engines change so frequently. I search scholarly material in the sciences, engineering, arts, and social sciences and am most frequently involved with tracking down articles and books. At the same time, I often find hints in others areas ranging from social networks to discussion forums and web archives.

What I Am Passionate About

Search, information, and talking about how librarians are involved with bot. I find sharing search stories with others, whether through presentations, individual communications, screenshots, or screencasts are all great ways to share my work in libraries and the information industry.

The Difference I Have Made

Librarians are so busy, and we all would like to have time to learn more and to know more about all the tools and resources we use. I try to take the time to do the in-depth analysis and evaluation of search tools, techniques, and databases to help save the time of the librarian. I always enjoying seeing how my work helps others to be more efficient in their jobs through sharing of information.

What I Am Most Excited About For 2013

The world of online information continues to grow and change and with recent changes in the devices we use to connect to the web, web search continues to fascinate me. Teaching others about the latest changes and finding the best ways to communicate the new information landscape will be a challenge in 2013 and a great opportunity.
